A second quorum-sensing system regulates cell surface properties but not phenazine antibiotic production in Pseudomonas aureofaciens.
The root-associated biological control bacterium Pseudomonas aureofaciens 30-84 produces a range of exoproducts, including protease and phenazines. Phenazine antibiotic biosynthesis by phzXYFABCD is regulated in part by the PhzR-PhzI quorum-sensing system. Mutants defective in phzR or phzI produce very low levels of phenazines but wild-type levels of exoprotease. In the present study, a second ...
متن کاملAn rhl-like quorum-sensing system negatively regulates pyoluteorin production in Pseudomonas sp. M18.
Pseudomonas sp. M18, isolated from the watermelon rhizosphere, is antagonistic against a number of soil-borne pathogens. This strain produces an uncharacterized red pigment, pyoluteorin (Plt), and two N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs). A previously isolated red-pigment-defective mutant, M18-T510, contains an insert within a gene similar to rhlI in P. aeruginosa PAO1. The M18 rhlI gene product is...
متن کاملA Quorum-Sensing System That Regulates Streptococcus pneumoniae Biofilm Formation and Surface Polysaccharide Production
Despite vaccines, Streptococcus pneumoniae kills more than a million people yearly. Thus, understanding how pneumococci transition from commensals to pathogens is particularly relevant. Quorum sensing regulates collective behaviors and thus represents a potential driver of commensal-to-pathogen transitions. Rgg/small hydrophobic peptide (SHP) quorum-sensing systems are widespread in streptococc...
متن کاملThe phenazine pyocyanin is a terminal signalling factor in the quorum sensing network of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Certain members of the fluorescent pseudomonads produce and secrete phenazines. These heterocyclic, redox-active compounds are toxic to competing organisms, and the cause of these antibiotic effects has been the focus of intense research efforts. It is largely unknown, however, how pseudomonads themselves respond to - and survive in the presence of - these compounds. Using Pseudomonas aeruginos...
متن کاملQuorum sensing regulates denitrification in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1.
Anaerobic growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 was affected by quorum sensing. Deletion of genes that produce N-acyl-l-homoserine lactone signals resulted in an increase in denitrification activity, which was repressed by exogenous signal molecules. The effect of the las quorum-sensing system was dependent on the rhl quorum-sensing system in regulating denitrification.
